Job Title: Plant Pathologist
Job Duties: Nature of the Position: This position is located in the NMC Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Service (NMC-CREES), under the supervision of the Dean of CREES and/or his/her designee. The position is a split appointment (split between research, and extension). The position is 50% for agricultural research and 50% for agricultural extension and outreach. This position is charged with the responsibility of assisting CREES in fulfilling its mission by providing the following performance responsibilities: Duties and Responsibilities: • Participates in NMC Program Review and Outcomes Assessment (PROA) activities. • Agriculture Research/Extension programs are interdisciplinary and require the ability of the scientist to work as a team member to: 1) Identify and diagnose plant disease/disorders in the CNMI, using appropriate field, nursery, and/or laboratory technology; 2) Write, prepare and manage grant proposals for submission to funding agencies to further their research and extension endeavors; 3) Establish research and extension program priorities based on stakeholder input and needs assessment; 4) Develop and implement a 5 Year Plan of Work based on USDA-NIFA National goals and stakeholder input; 5) Manage the daily operations of the Plant Diagnostic/Research Laboratory • Develop research and extension manuscripts and publications. • Document, identify, and hold in permanent collection the existing plant pathogens in the CNMI and their possible natural bio-controls. • Establish and develop collaborative linkages with the public, other agriculture professionals, nongovernmental organizations, colleges, universities, and sister governmental agencies addressing plant disease/disorder that are relevant to CNMI concerns on a local, regional, and/or national basis. • Acts as a Program Leader and Principal Investigator (PI) in the Crop Improvement Program. • Provides technical advice to farmers and farmers’ organizations on 1) identifying plant pathogens; 2) suggesting suppression methods; 3) providing advice on farming methods that would help prevent unnecessary occurrences of plant pathogens on farmlands; 4) publishing information and research results in periodic reports to our clientele and in refereed professional journals. • Works cooperatively with CNMI farmers & CREES staff to carry out various experimental studies on crops that are suitable to our climatic conditions and possess qualities that could potentially alleviate some of the high input costs associated with farming. • Collects, records, and analyzes data that will be disseminated to stakeholders by using an array of techniques to reach even the unconventional clientele (i.e. field demonstrations, group discussions, workshops, newsletters, brochures, flyers, posters, calendars, television and radio programs, etc.) • Conduct workshops, training, and certification programs relevant to discipline of expertise. • The applicant must also be willing to support the teaching and research efforts of Northern Marianas College. The candidate must be prepared to teach, if the appropriate funding opportunities arise, using a variety of modalities, including distance education. • Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: The scientist is expected to develop a work plan, which will involve collaborating with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups, and extension and research personnel in addition to overseeing program personnel. As a result of his/her professional competencies, at times this individual will be charged with coordinating events, acquiring funding, evaluating established project outcome measures and supervising personnel. The scientist will assist and support the CREES Dean and/or his/her designee in planning and executing projects of great interest to CNMI stakeholders.

Qualification Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: • A Ph.D. from a U.S.-accredited institution in Plant Pathology, Mycology, Plant Health, or a closely related discipline plus five (5) years of intensive laboratory and/or field diagnostic, research and extension experience. • Specific experience in plant disease diagnosis and management, plus an established scholarly record of research and publication is necessary. • Experience with writing, preparing and managing competitive grants to support extension and research activities is required. Preferred Qualifications: • Experience in tropical agriculture; • Experience and/or willingness to write, prepare and manage competitive grants to support extension and research activities Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities; • Evidence of positive team interaction; • A scholarly record of research publications; • Ability to adapt successfully and communicate effectively in a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic community; • Ability to communicate effectively in English using oral, written and electronic methods;
