Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Technician
Job Duties: Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, this person will perform phlebotomy and related duties in the Clinical Laboratory. These duties include Microbiology set-ups; preparation of solutions; collection of specimens for analysis; distribution of laboratory data; performance of clerical and courier functions. Performs pre-analytic procedures of specimen collection and processing. This includes but not limited to interpreting provider test orders and monitoring for accuracy, prioritizing specimen handling based on type and clinical urgency, investigating and documenting erroneous orders or other pre-analytic specimen problems, preparing specimens for transport, and data entry into the electronic medical record. Provides directions to patients for collection of non-blood specimens. Handles telephone inquiries for staff and providers. Performs adult and pediatric phlebotomy by capillary and venous collection, routine and stat laboratory tests utilizing automated equipment and test kits. Have the ability to understand, operate, and troubleshoot (may involve working with manufacturer’s customer service personnel) the applicable equipment and testing methods. Work accurately and precisely and can organize the workload to meet service demands, calmly and efficiently. Performs quality control analysis on all test assigned and determines whether all parameters are within established ranges. Evaluates test results and understands critical value limits for all tests assigned and reports immediately to appropriate medical staff. Able to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of test results and equipment. May monitor laboratory equipment inventory and place orders for supplies as directed by the CMO. May participate in training activities by demonstrating routine laboratory techniques to new employees as directed by and coordinated with the CMO. Assists with solving daily issues, such as equipment or ordering problems, notify the CMO or managers when necessary. Identifies problems or potential problems in a timely manner and refers them to the CMO. Documents issues and events appropriately. May send out letters to patients, as delegated by clinic providers, with lab results or overdue reminder letters for appointments. Promotes and follows goals as well as clinic standards for service efficiency, and effectiveness. Consistently provide the highest quality of customer service to patients, families, guests, and co-workers. Complies with KCHC risk management program, including accurate and timely reporting of all adverse incidents as described in the policy. Complies with all applicable information security policies and procedures. Accesses only the patient's health information that is appropriate for the duties performed. Keep all medical health records confidential. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements: Completion of phlebotomy technician certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology or other phlebotomy or laboratory assistant course certification and one (1) year experience in a clinical laboratory preferred. Or high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and one year of laboratory assistant or phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory such as research, chemical, biology, microbiology, medical, public health laboratory or other related field. Ability to work effectively with coworkers and clients. Must have good oral and written communication skills. Comprehensive of basic medical information. Computer literacy is necessary.
