Job Title: Assistant Animal Handler
Job Duties: Assists the Animal Handler and Animal Attendant on daily operation of a marine life interaction facility from general maintenance to care for marine animals such as stingrays and nurse sharks with emphasis in learning animal husbandry, handling and training. Feed, water, groom, bathe, exercise, or otherwise care for marine animals. Work at the SeaTouch facility and inside holding pens. Keep and maintain records of feedings, treatments, and marine animals received or discharged. May clean, disinfect, and repair facility. Greet guests and act on inquiries from clients, guests, and to a lesser extent, the general public. Assist with the collection/capture and transport marine animals (live stingrays) to the SeaTouch facility. Brief guests on safety procedures and ensure the safety of all participants. Present information using a variety of instructional techniques or formats, such as role playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, videos, or lectures. Confer with clients to provide information about products, services, or in making reservations. Guide guests from registration to the facility, holding pen, and back. Maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, and visitors. Monitor guests during presentations with safety as the primary concern. Respond to questions from staff or guests and provide information about animals such as behavior, habitat, breeding habits, or facility activities. Install, maintain, and repair marine animal holding pens such as lights, feeding devices, and cages. Dismantle and assemble docks and holding pens during severe weather or as needed. Transfer marine animals between holding pens to facilitate rearrangement of exhibits, especially during severe weather. Rescue distressed persons from hazardous situations using equipment, administer first aid, and request emergency personnel as needed. Monitor environmental conditions to detect hazards. Answer telephones and convey messages. Order, unload, and store feed and supplies. Process payment and prepare bills, statements, receipts, or other documents. Promote services or products by distributing photos and merchandise. Provide transportation for guests to and from airport, hotel, and/or various locations of tour activities. High School Diploma Required? Yes
Qualification Requirements: High school diploma or GED. Able and willing to work in the water inside marine animal holdings pens and inside or outside the office buildings in conditions involving inclement weather, excessive heat, cold, standing, walking, bending, stretching, and other physical dexterity. Must be able and willing to work shifts, evenings, holidays, weekends, and during inclement weather. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Must have or be able and willing to obtain a valid Lifeguard/First Aid & CPR certification. Must be able to drive company vehicles safely.
