| Job Duties: | Attend to live farm or ranch animals that may include cattle, goats, hogs, poultry, and others. Duties may include feeding, watering, herding, grazing, castrating, branding, de-beaking, weighing, catching, and loading animals. May maintain records on animals; examine animals to detect diseases and injuries; assist in birth deliveries; and administer medications, vaccinations, or insecticides as appropriate. May clean and maintain animal housing areas. Livestock Tasks •Feed and water livestock; and monitor food and water supplies. •Drive trucks and other equipment to pick up and distribute feed to animals. •Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and to check physical characteristics, such as rate of weight gain. •Provide medical treatment, such as administering medications and vaccinations; or arrange for veterinarians to provide more extensive treatment. •Mix feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions. •Inspect, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences. •Move equipment, poultry, or livestock from one location to another, manually or using trucks or carts. •Clean stalls, pens, and equipment, using disinfectant solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, and/or pumps. •Mark livestock to identify ownership and grade, using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos. •Herd livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures. Farming Tasks •Perform crop production duties such as planning, tilling, planting, fertilizing, cultivating, spraying, and harvesting. •Plan crop activities based on factors such as crop maturity and weather conditions. •Monitor crops as they grow in order to ensure that they are growing properly and are free from diseases and contaminants. •Maintain facilities such as fencing, water supplies, and outdoor housing and wind shelters. •Determine types and quantities of crops or livestock to be raised, according to factors such as market conditions, federal program availability, and soil conditions. •Select and purchase supplies and equipment such as seed, fertilizers, and farm machinery. •Lubricate, adjust, and make minor repairs to farm equipment, using oilcans, grease guns, and hand tools. •Set up and operate farm machinery to cultivate, harvest, and haul crops. •Evaluate product marketing alternatives, then promote and market farm products, acting as the sales agent for livestock and crops. |
