Job Title: Financial Aid Specialist III - Limited Term Appointment
Job Duties: Nature of the Position: The position is located at the Financial Aid Office under the direct supervision of the Director, Financial Aid. This position engages individual students at critical points during their enrollment to reaffirm the availability of support and to discuss options and pathways that empower students to continue the pursuit of short and long term educational goals. The Financial Aid Counselor is committed to advancing the goals, objectives, activities, and services of the Financial Aid Office, the CNMI College Access Challenge Grant (CACG), and the Northern Marianas College. Duties and Responsibilities: • Participates in program review and outcomes assessment (PROA) activities. • Participates in accreditation effort activities. • Provides high-quality internal and external customer service. • Advises and counsels students and prospective students on all aspects of student financial aid such as satisfactory progress, ineligibility, rules and regulations, appeals, and assist applicants in completing related forms. • Assist in the general administration of federal, state, local, institutional, and private financial aid programs to students. • Primary responsibility for determining student’s eligibility for financial assistance through review of applications and other pertinent data for further processing, analysis and packaging of assistance. • Manages all applicant and student correspondence and inquiries. • Creates and maintains financial aid files. • Perform need analysis, verification and packaging and ensure the accuracy of student financial aid awards and records. • Coordinate, participate, and present in outreach efforts, including workshops for orientation and other college preparatory events and activities. This includes coordination, planning and delivery of programs and workshops on financial aid and financial aid application processes. • Responsible for supervising policies and procedures to assure that all new students interested in applying for financial aid are informed, advised, and assisted in the process. • Review and evaluate students’ Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with SAP policies; review, evaluate and take action on student complaints and appeals relating to financial aid eligibility. • Design and implement intervention strategies in support success of students on financial aid probation or suspension. • Collects and processes verification documents. • Supervises and evaluates the work performance of student trainees. • Develops students’ money management skills by assisting students with financial and career planning. • Provide support to programs and activities that advance the goals and objectives of the College Access Challenge Grant (CACG). • Serves as a member of the NMC Recruitment and Registration Committees. • Assists in the design, implementation, and maintenance of financial aid databases. • Conducts federal and other financial assistance workshops/seminars to high school counselors and students. • Prepares a variety of consumer information, applications, and other materials for use to conduct financial aid workshops. • Perform general office processes in various areas of financial aid administration. • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. Department of Education recognized and accredited institution, plus four (4) years of financial aid and administrative experience or experience as a counselor, instructor, or advisor, or a combination. Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s degree from a U.S. Department of Education recognized and accredited institution • Two (2) years of financial aid and administrative experience or work experience as a counselor, instructor, or advisor, or a combination. • Demonstrable knowledge relating to the administration of federal financial aid. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Strong working knowledge of outreach principles in higher education. • Understanding and familiarity with retention strategies among low-income, Native Pacific Islander students. • Meets regularly scheduled and routine working hours and has a willingness to occasionally work beyond the routine working hours during break, seasons or for special events. • Understands current federal financial aid regulations and institutional aid policies and contributes to compliance with those standards; ability to research regulations and policies when clarification is needed. • Must have strong computer background including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, and database, preferably Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access software applications. • Able to communicate effectively with students, staff, faculties, and other college stakeholders. • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and a high attention to detail. • Capable of handling multiple tasks while maintaining composure under stressful conditions. • Completes and prioritize tasks accurately and in a timely manner. • Takes initiative and works both independently and cooperatively in a team environment. • Must be able to present information in clear and professional manner. • Contributes and promotes a positive and professional working environment and relationship with the college community and promotes a positive representation of the Financial Aid Office and the College.
