Job Title: Infection Control Preventionist
Job Duties: Responsible for the effective direction, management and operation of the hospital-wide infection prevention and control program in conjunction with the hospital Infection Control Committee, Quality & Performance Management and other appropriate medical and ancillary hospital personnel. Develop a well-defined hospital-wide written Infection Prevention & Control Plan supported by implementing guides, policies and procedures, organizational philosophy, goals and objectives that includes provisions for surveillance, outbreak investigations, communicable disease reporting, educational program and employee health services for employees. Assist in the establishment of an Infection Control Committee to address issues, recommend practices and protocols for regulatory compliance. Utilize clinical and evidence-based definitions to carry out investigation process. Design and evaluate effectiveness of the prevention and control strategies based on national standards. Conduct on-going surveillance using Centers of Disease Control (CDC)/National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN Guidelines) through systematic approach to reviewing post discharge surveillance. Conduct environmental survey in all ancillary units, general facility, in-patient and out-patient care areas. Conduct investigations of unusual hospital infection and outbreaks utilizing background in microbiology, pathophysiology, nursing practice and report epidemiologically significant findings to Infection Control Committee, Quality Performance, medical staff, and other appropriate officials and individuals. Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessary. Comply and report all in-house patients with communicable disease to the Infection Control Committee and maintain appropriate records. Review infected/colonized patients who need to be recultured and possibly removed from precautions. Serve as resource person regarding monitoring and referral of employee illnesses to ensure follow-up care of exposure situations, infectious and/or communicable diseases. Identify patients who are infected and/or colonized with organisms capable of producing nonsocomial infections. Recommend changes in hospital procedures that relate to infection prevention and control, utilizing nationally accepted guidelines and applicable laws, standards, protocols, rules and regulations. Conduct educational session/in-service for staff pertaining to policies, procedures and standards of infection prevention and control. Review laboratory culture reports and ensure appropriate isolation precautions and personal protective equipment are observed. Identify trends in antibiotic resistant organisms and reports information at appropriate committee meetings. Participate in the implementation of the Exposure Control Plan. In the event of a threat or an outbreak of infection, under the direction from Infection Control Committee, institute appropriate infection prevention and control measures. Function as a clinical resource to implement activities proven effective in prevention and/or reducing infections. Serve on committees, as appropriate, which are involved in the selection and evaluation of practices, equipment and supplies, that impact on infection prevention and control. Collect data in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the problem and make appropriate recommendations or decisions. Collect, tabulate, analyze, and report results of surveillance activities. Report monthly, or as often as necessary or appropriate, healthcare associated infections (HAI) to Infection Control Committee and other health regulatory authorities. Participate in quality/performance improvement activities by assessing, monitoring, and measuring healthcare associated infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basis. Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Control meetings and dissemination of recommendations hospital-wide. Serve as a resource person on infection control practices and policies to patients, families, staff, and health system employees. Maintain compliance with national standards and regulating bodies such as CMS, JC, CDC, OSHA, FDA and Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA).

Qualification Requirements: Completion of an accredited medical professional program with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Biology, Public Health, Medical Technologist, etc. required. Five (5) years nursing experience in an acute care setting, one year of which as Infection Control Preventionist or post graduate nursing in an acute care setting preferred. Must hold a current CNMI license as Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) license and BLS required. Knowledge of principles of epidemiology infection control, infectious diseases and microbiology required. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and facilitation skills. Possess strong time management skills. Analytical skills, including an understanding of basic statistics. Independent and self-motivated. Willingness to obtain certifications on specialty areas as appropriate.
