Job Title: Phlebotomist (DLS Saipan)
Job Duties: 1. Performs the following tasks, as assigned: 1.1 Phlebotomy 1.2 Other specimen collections 1.3 Accessioning (data entry) 1.4 Processing of specimens 1.5 Forensic Toxicology: specimen collections, Breath Alcohol Testing 1.6 Clerical activities 2. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment. 3. Operates laboratory information system to perform various tasks. 4. Organizes and maintains work area and supplies. 5. May perform Point-of-Care and/or waived testing. 6. Represents the company in interactions with patients and clients. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Accessioning (as applicable): 1.1 Accessions laboratory test requests: keys patient demographics into laboratory information system. 1.2 Performs edit checks and verifies work of team members for accuracy and detail. 1.3 Uses various functions to resolve problems and extract pertinent information. 1.4 Specimen Collection: 1.4.1 Collects blood specimen from patient by either venipuncture or skin puncture techniques. 1.4.2 Accurately identifies patients and specimens according to prescribed procedures. 1.4.3 Procures or receives other non-blood specimens. Verifies specimen integrity and specimen identification. 1.5 Communicates with clients to resolve problem orders. 2. Processing of Specimens (as applicable): 2.1 Processes and handles specimens to maintain specimen integrity according to established procedures. 2.2 Sorts specimens for and/or routes specimens to various departments. 2.3 Determines priority of testing and processes specimens to meet priority requirements 2.4 Prepares specimens for transport and/or shipping according to DLS procedures and policies. Follows IATA shipping regulations as required. 2.5 Prepares specimens for testing according to established specifications. 2.6 Operates centrifuge according to established procedures. 2.7 Performs Point-of-Care and/or waived testing as approved by the Medical Director and as necessary, by a waiver from the Department of Health for the specific testing site. 3. Performs the following duties as applicable: 3.1 Obtains pertinent patient information for laboratory records and/or billing purposes. 3.1.1 Prepares and/or verifies information on requisitions for accuracy, and completeness. 3.1.2 Acquires appropriate authorization and signatures on requisition forms. 3.2 Answers telephone, receives and relays messages for requests such as specimen pick-up, courier dispatch, laboratory reports, test orders, etc. 3.3 Operates laboratory information system to perform necessary tasks, such as but not limited to: 3.3.1 Preparing draw list and specimen labels 3.3.2 Printing reports and worksheets 3.4 Provides feedback to marketing on client accounts. 3.5 Performs daily startup/shutdown and housekeeping duties for assigned area 3.5.1 Maintains clean and organized work area. 3.6 Operates and maintains equipment, such as but not limited to centrifuges, pagers, computer hardware, printers, telephones, and answering machines 3.7 Maintains procedures, records, and logs following established procedures. 3.7.1 Maintains and monitors the phlebotomy logbook. 3.8 Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and places orders as needed. 3.9 Coordinates with various departments and resolves problems as they arise. 3.10 Assist clients with troubleshooting DLS related equipment and/or procedures. 3.11 Operates pneumatic tube system. 3.12 Transports/delivers items such as but not limited to specimens, reports and supplies. May act as courier, as directed. 3.13 Maintains and monitors STAT call printer. 3.14 Sorts and checks overall presentation of report forms and ancillary documents prior to distribution. 3.15 Monitors and processes documents via fax, including but not limited to reports and requisitions. 3.16 Monitors add-on confirmation forms. 3.17 Handles payments for laboratory services. 4. Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s). 5. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc. 6. Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner. 7. Supports organizational performance and strategy by providing information and contributing to quality improvements, as appropriate. 8. Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with DLS safety policies and procedures. Reports unsafe actions/conditions and injuries to supervisor promptly. 9. Maintains a positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers. 10. Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures. 11. Attends and/or participates in activities such as but not limited to meetings, required in-service programs, and continuing education and competency assessments. 12. Models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and shared values of the organization. 13. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures. 14. Laboratory Assistants stationed at physician offices/hospital departments: Performs only phlebotomy, specimen processing and corresponding clerical work necessary to process DLS laboratory requests. 15. Performs other duties as required. 16. Forensic Toxicology (as applicable): 16.1 Breath Alcohol Testing 16.1.1 Performs breath alcohol tests in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements. 16.1.2 Processes and distributes breath alcohol documents. 16.1.3 Interacts with designated client contacts regarding positive breath alcohol results. 16.2 Forensic Toxicology specimen collection. 16.2.1 Collects forensic toxicology urine or blood specimens following federal or state requirements. 16.2.2 Performs same-sex observed urine collections as assigned. 16.2.3 Signs affidavits and handles inquiries from clients and donors. 16.3 Processes and handles specimens according to regulatory requirements.
High School Diploma Required? Yes
Qualification Requirements: Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Academic background with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred. Experience: One-year patient care, medical laboratory, or equivalent public contact experience preferred. Previous phlebotomy experience preferred. Certification: Certification from ASCP-BOC or APT as phlebotomist preferred. Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form. Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team. Excellent customer service skills. Typing: 96% accuracy at 30 wpm. Other Qualifications (as applicable): Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current acceptable traffic abstract.
